NCAA and NBA News, NotesNCAA milestones and great NBA performances under the microscopeBob Knight will soon be the winningest coach in NCAA history, and Daniel Gibson is a rookie standout. These are just a couple of the Suite101's NCAA & NBA news and notes.
News from around the NBA & NCAATexas Tech coach Bob Knight will soon be the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history. In a major NCAA news story, Bob Knight recently tied Kentucky legend Adolph Rupp. Knight’s reaction to the milestone? “I once scored 7 points against the ornery son of a bitch to help beat him. That’s a lot bigger memory than (tying Rupp’s victory mark).” What else would you have expected from Bob Knight? Phoenix and New Jersey fight an epic battle. If all NBA teams were this exciting and all NBA games had this much action, the NBA wouldn’t need hype. Phoenix defeated New Jersey 161-157 in double-overtime, in a game that saw two of the best NBA players wage war against their opponents and each other. Two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash had 42 points and 13 assists to lead the Suns. Nash was 6-7 from long distance. His counterpart, Jason Kidd, was even better. Kidd netted 38 points, passed out 14 assists and snared 14 rebounds. This may turn out to be the best game of the 2006-07 NBA season; at least until the NBA All-Star game arrives. Butler has a shot at an unbeaten season. In some shocking NCAA News, the Butler Bulldogs started the 2006-2007 campaign a perfect 10-0, including two wins over ranked teams and a pre-season NIT championship. With no heavies left on its schedule, Butler has a legitimate shot finishing the year undefeated. The Horizon League gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which the Bulldogs won’t need, even if they don’t win the league and finish perfect. We have to wonder, though, if Butler is college basketball’s only unbeaten team, will they be ranked high enough as a mid-major to get a top seed in the tournament? Cavs rookie is a big surprise. Rookie NBA news surrounds players like Adam Morrison, Brandon Roy and Randy Foye. A guy who has played in just eight games doesn’t get much attention. Enter Cavaliers second-round selection, Daniel Gibson, out of Texas. Gibson sat for most of the early part of the season, before suddenly getting a start in early December. Gibson responded with 18 points from the shooting guard spot in a Cavaliers win. Although he’s getting just 6.4 points per game, Gibson is shooting 40% from 3-point range – not bad for a guy who was considered a streak shooter. Gibson is definitely surprising NBA News.
