NBA Live 07 Is Hottest Video Game

New EA Sports game is sure to be top NBA Christmas gift

As part of the Topps generation, I'm struggling to understand the fascination with EA Sports hot new video game, NBA Live 07.

When I was a kid, it was all about Topps bubble gum cards, featuring NBA players, and indoor-outdoor basketballs. Now, it’s NBA Live 07.

I was doing a little Internet surfing recently, looking for hot basketball gifts, and all I can find is NBA Live 07. Google has well over 5 million pages one can click to, that at least mention NBA Live 07.

Being the out-of-touch elder statesman that I am, I decided to do a little research. After all, I didn’t even know what NBA Live 07 was; I had heard neighborhood kids say that it is all the rage this year – using current kid vernacular, of course. Before I realized that it is the new "all that" game, I just figured NBA Live 07 was a new way for the league to promote live games next season.

What I learned is that NBA Live 07 is EA Sports’ newest video game for Playstation and Xbox games, released in September of 2006. Houston Rockets forward Tracy McGrady dons the cover of the game, which perplexed me, as I thought the NBA would want a true star – not a guy whose best years are apparently behind him.

Why not LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or NBA players of this ilk? At least their teams have cool game controllers that match their Playstation and Xbox game systems.

McGrady is not only on the cover of NBA Live 07, he even promotes the game, saying that NBA Live 07 makes you feel like you’re actually in the game.

To feel like "you’re in the game," though, you’ll have to drop $39 or more dollars, depending on which type of Playstation or Xbox system you are using.

You do have a game system, right?

Now, if you really want to be hip (a word from my generation, not the kids’), you’ll also need the Mad Catz NBA Control Pad Pro, which will cost you an additional $29.99, but at least you’ll look cool, when you’re feeling "like you’re really there."

I can’t say that I’ve ever tried NBA Live 07; I’m not much for Playstation or Xbox video games. Like everything else in life, the simple pleasures of basketball have become high-tech and very expensive.

I guess what I’m really trying to say is you can keep your NBA Live 07. Just stuff my Christmas stocking full of Topps cards, featuring LeBron James and my other favorite NBA players and NBA teams, and I’ll have a happy holiday.
