John Amaechi is gay. So what? John Amaechi is a former NBA player, who kept his homosexuality a secret for the five seasons that he bounced around the league. Now, John Amaechi wants you, NBA players and anyone who walks into Barnes & Noble to know that he’s gay. What we can’t figure out is who really cares? Not so long ago, John Amaechi didn’t want the big, strong, macho guys of the NBA and its big, strong, macho fans to know that he prefers men over women. So, Amaechi stayed quiet and kept his personal life to himself. Now, he’s gone far from the NBA and from the national TV spotlight. He lives in Manchester, where he could forever keep any secret he desires from the NBA, its fans and from the nosey American media. Yet, John Amaechi suddenly has an insatiable urge to tell you that he is, in fact, a gay man. The homosexual John Amaechi has penned a book, “Man In The Middle,” which loudly announces that Amaechi is gay, was gay when he wan an NBA player and will, until he thinks up a book with a different angle, most likely continue to be gay. And, we must wonder, who are the people who care that John Amaechi is gay? It’s rumored that he was a large part of the gay community, when he played in Utah, so they won’t be surprised. NBA players asked to comment on Amaechi’s closeted homosexuality have offered little more than a shrug and a, “Big deal.” Twenty years ago, this would have been a fascinating story for the NBA and the entire world of sports. Pro athletes have kept their homosexuality a secret for decades, in times when being gay was not tolerated by American society. This is the 21st century, though, and few people flinch, when they hear about a new celebrity outing himself. And John Amaechi isn’t much of a celebrity. Now, thanks to his new book, at least we all know, unequivocally, that John Amaechi is gay. Mind you, we like him no more or no less, now that we know that John Amaechi is gay. We are as indifferent toward John Amaechi as we’ve always been. By the way, we’ve heard that Yao Ming is considering a book, which he’ll call, “Big Man In The Middle,” announcing to the entire world that Yao is tall. Hurry, the lines at the bookstores are forming already.
